A tip for this weekend

The Charlotte Symphony’s Summer Pops season is nearing its halfway mark, and it’s one of my favorite summer events around here.

I haven’t had a chance to catch a show yet this month, but I hope to head out this weekend. If you’ve never been before but you’re planning to go, here are a couple of tips (and keep in mind there are other shows around the region besides those at SouthPark):

--At SouthPark, the first thing to know is to arrive early. Hard-core fans get there around 8 a.m. on Sundays, spread a blanket to mark their spots and then return closer to the concert time. Don’t try to leave blankets earlier than that, though, or they’ll be removed – and don’t use tent stakes or gravel from the walkways to weigh them down. Mosquito-repellent candles make nice weights.

--Make sure you’re using low beach chairs so you won’t block those behind you. Don’t bring large umbrellas, pets or open flame cookers. And for heaven’s sake, turn off your cell phone.

--Go all-out with your picnic. Bring an elaborate basket, and then sneak peeks at all your neighbors to see who went to the most trouble.

Okay heres one for you Grand Ole Oprahy fans ; About two hours away near Virginia they just built an outside stage with seating and Bluegrass is played all the time , check schedueles for time frames. Also, Please , go to OKRACOKE and see the wonderful Ocean, Beaches and the FERRY SYSTEM that takes you across wonderful waterways of N.C. Please start off at Southport and ride the ferry all the way to Ocracoke and catch inexspensive hotels all the way. The Ferry SYSTEM in N.C. is dynamic and can carry you all the way to Virginia. Eat at HOWARDS PUB a real famous eatery and there are many more near Ockracoke thats great. If you can take your bikes its great biking there. They also have spectacular camp grounds also in Buxton . Speaking of Buxton dont forget to see OLD SWIRLY the LIGHTHOUSE and I love the view from Currituck Lighthouse.

I think it's great that the CSO puts on Pops in the Park, and it is a signature event for Charlotte. But it's also a high-proof distillation of what's annoying about living here. It's not the performances, or the event sponsors; it's the attendees. Far too many inconsiderate, self-important posers who treat the occassion much as eighth graders treat a night at the movies - a chance to conspicuously socialize at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment.

At least they don't attend CSO events at the Blumenthal. Probably because they're actually expected to act like adults.

Why do you have to drive 2-3 hours to do or see anything decent around here?
