Charlotte: Top City

Whether or not you’re a follower of those “top cities” lists - the magazines and firms that rank the best cities for living, working, dating or eating - you might be interested in knowing how many of those lists Charlotte has been making it onto lately.

I detailed many of them in Sunday’s paper, but you’re probably wondering who ranked No. 1 in each category Charlotte was mentioned in. Read on for the info:

--City for African Americans: Washington D.C. was No. 1 in Black Enterprise Magazine. Charlotte ranked No. 7.

--Most Fun Cities: Minneapolis-St. Paul was tops, according to board game maker Cranium. Charlotte was 29th.

--Most Adventurous Cities: San Francisco topped the list in a ranking from Zest; Charlotte was 9th.

--Top 100 Ideal Cities to Grill In: Propane tank company Blue Rhino says Sacramento, CA is best and tied us for 49th.

--Rich Bachelors: San Francisco is the best large city for finding them. Citytowninfo says we’re No. 7.

--But not young singles? We failed to make Kiplinger Personal Finance Magazine’s list of best cities for young singles, while Raleigh hit No. 4.

--Walking City: Prevention Magazine gave Madison, WI the crown, and we were No. 4.

--Sizzling Restaurants: Nation’s Restaurant News named “Top 50 Cities that Sizzle,” but printed them in alphabetical order instead of ranking them. Click here and scroll down.

--Dangerous cities: Local police rejected the validity of our ranking as the No. 8 most dangerous large city in America, as did those in the No. 1 city, St. Louis, Mo.

--Bad Drivers: We hovered near the worst rating at 93rd out of 100 cities in Men’s Health Magazine, but another Carolinas city claimed the dubious honor of worst of the worst: Columbia, S.C.

Which rankings do you agree or disagree with the most?

The Charlotte police can and will quibble with the methodology of the Most Dangerous City rankings, but I won't. Just watch the news, this friggin' town has more than its fair share of lunatic car jackers, armed robberies, etc. It seems like the criminals basically have a free pass around here.

Well when Channel 9 sensationalizes everything and the other stations try to follow, yeah, you're going to have that perception. We're not without our problems, but you'd think we were Newark or Detroit if you believed everything in the news.

#4 Walking City? Where did they find a sidewalk?

I definitely agree with the 93rd worst driving city. I just moved from Boston, and yes, granted we are obnoxious drivers....AT LEAST WE CAN DRIVE. You can not go two feet in this city without seeing a wreck.

Charlotte is the #1 front runner city in the country. That is why I moved.

Leigh, who is this crazy person that goes on all the blogs and types sometimes in CAPITAL LETTERS? You can tell it's him by his crazy writing style, and he posts several posts in each blog that don't make any sense. Too bad there isn't a way to BAN HIM.

I have trouble with the #4 Walking City. Charlotte's greenway system is fantastic, but city sidewalks seem to be the exception vs. the rule.

I agree with Charlotte being one of the more dangerous cities... and I think it has a lot to do with our police officers being pretty slack. A friend of mine was in a car accident in South Charlotte, it was her fault. A cop drove up to her car, and asked her if she was OK. She said yes, and he drove on. It was compeltely ridiculous. College kids also get away with all kinds of things without any repercussions. Cops stop by, tell them to be quiet, and maybe will write them a noise violation. Not that I do not want these kids to have a great time, but they get on the roads and drive home.

If you don't drive a car, don't even bother living in Charlotte. If you dare ride a bike, God bless you. Has anyone ever thought of bicycles as mass transit in Charlotte. Why don't we build a $$$$$ light rail system, yeah! How much does a bike trail cost? One less car?? What's that?
