Bakery recommendations

Finding a good bakery is important to many newcomers, as I learned from writing about the topic recently. Here’s a complete list of bakeries recommended by readers, plus the initial list from last week:

--Marguerite’s French Pastries in NoDa, 2424 N. Davidson St.

--Nova’s in Plaza-Midwood, 1511 Central Ave.

-- Nona’s Sweets in University City, 9601 N. Tryon St.

--Great Harvest Bakery at 901 S. Kings Drive; www.greatharvestcharlotte.com

--Decadent Designs Bakery, 11914 Elm Lane, Suite. 140; www.decadentdesignsbakery.com

--Jimmie’s Sweets, 131 Matthews Station St., Matthews.

--Suarez Bakery in the Park Road Shopping Center, 4245 Park Road.

--Panera Bread Bakery-Cafes, various locations, www.panerabread.com

--Also, be aware that the two Jersey Girl Bakery locations mentioned last week have recently closed.

Got any more recommendations? Post ‘em here.

There's a notice on noda.org that "Marguerite’s French Pastries" is about to go out of business.

Bakeries just aren't that big down South. Although I love a good bakery with all the cookies and pastries... it is probably a good thing!

In Upper Arlington , Ohio where Im from suburb of Columbus, O there is a little place called La CHATELIENE a French bakery and eatery; The man and wife who owns it are French and bake French quisine in a STONE wood fired oven; When you step into the place it looks like FRANCE and tastes like FRANCE everything is great all the BAKED goods are a work of art and great to eat . THIS IS what CHARLOTTE should really be not some "HODGE PODGE" "wanna be" Restuarant ; This city does not have a plan and it shows.

Charlotte has People coming here from everywhere with the idea anyone can open up a restuarant ; WRONG WRONG WRONG ; Its just doesnt simply happen . Its a plan of ethnic foods such as FRENCH , CUBAN , and so on . This city should have a restaurant row like Washington D.C. where rent is cheap and the food is great and the place is safe. People are trying to simulate what they saw back home and it needs PIZZAZE.

People in CHARLOTTE live in HONEY COMBS in Downtown and are afraid to walk out after 5:oo o clock for dinner. Therefore no dinner places will make a profit and thus ,go away. The rest of Charlotte fights traffic to go home , like SALMOn up a river, and therefore will not make the effort to go farther than their REFRIGERATOR for a frozen dinner and a rerun of SIENFELD.

To the person who likes to put emphasis on words by typing in all caps: get a dictionary and learn to spell. If Upper Arlington, Ohio (cough) is so great, perhaps you should consider moving back. They need you there to eat the "quisine," and we could all watch the "Sienfeld" reruns in peace.

Hansel & Gretel's Bakery is the only good bakery in Charlotte. That's why the others close.

That is so sad about Marguerite's French Bakery!!! Perhaps if they were in a better location, like the "heart" of the NODA shopping district were people walk around it would of been more better.

Hansel & Gretel's bakery is not a good choice. The customer service is poor and even though the cake is okay, it's not worth dealing with the attitude. Buyer beware!

It was no surprise that Marguerite's closed. The food was always stale! We, too, are transplants and the only good bakery in Charlotte is Hansel and Gretel's. They are best known for their cakes, but everything I've had there has been delicious-- definitely home made.

Hansel and Gretel's Bakery is the place to go - their stuff is the real deal, and cakes to die for. My kids and husband love it.
