Where's your neighborhood hangout?

Several newcomers have told me that they didn’t truly like their new homes here in the Charlotte region until they found their neighborhood’s hangout.

Often it’s a small restaurant or bar. Those who go often enough learn to greet other regulars by name and don’t have to look at the menu to know what to order.

For a column in Sunday’s paper, I’m writing about how a newcomer has taken over one Charlotte-area hangout, Providence Sundries, with a goal of preserving its neighborhood feel. It’s been a gathering spot in Myers Park, on Providence Road about three miles south of uptown, since 1933.

I’m asking readers to give me their suggestions of other neighborhood hangouts around the region – and it doesn’t have to be a bar or restaurant. Maybe it’s a pool or a park or a corner drugstore. Anywhere that makes you feel at home, and provides a gathering spot for you and your neighbors, qualifies.

If I can compile a list for some of our neighborhoods, maybe it’ll help other newcomers who are trying to get settled in.

Please post names of spots, and the neighborhood they're in, here or drop me a line at Ldyer@charlotteobserver.com.

As far as Gateway Village goes, the main hangout seems to be the Cedar Street Tavern at the corner of Cedar and 5th... it's usually full of locals and a few over-21 Johnson and Wales students. Before CST, the main Gateway hangout was Cuvée Wine + Art Gallery (which went out of business in 2005).

In Lake Norman familes like to go to Birkdale Village. The eclectic clothing stores like Lotus and Belle Vista create a cool "boutique district" feel and you know you can go out in those clothes without seeing your outfit on ten people. The restaurants are good and that's where you'll often see neighbors, thus a good neighborhood hangout. Kids love playing in the fountains on warm days and there's great synergy creating a nice neighborhood atmosphere with the great amenities of a city.

Please remove the comment by anonymous regarding Vinnie's etc. It is offensive to think that what the poster feels is needed for a good neighborhood hangout is leering at young women - gives Charlotte a bad name. I'd like to think this is a family friendly blog.

Tyber Creek and Thomas Ave. have always been good neighborhood spots, though I'm quickly latching on to Murphy's new location on Woodlawn.

Oh and the 7:27 anon, needs to lighten up. It's that type of uptight attitude that gives Charlotte a bad name.

Huntersville has a great new Pizza Place called Poillucci's Pizza. Although it is takeout only the pizza and story behind this place is awesome. Poillucci's is located at the corner of Old Statesville and MT-Holly Huntersville Rd. Just south of townhall. Enjoy and make sure you call ahead and ask for Kevin. (704-947-3223)

I second the O'sheas pub at the Fountains, great bacon cheese fries and even better people.

Yeah, seriously, lighten up. And you wonder why Charlotte has a boring nightlife. Everything here doesn't have to be family friendly! Ugh.

Cimney Rock will be swinging when the STATE does all their remodling up there. I heard Chimney Rock will have a huge WINE store with all featuring all Home grown North Carolina wines from ashville to YANDKIN VALLEY. i also heard there may be a huge Luxurious Hotel like the RiTZ CARLTON coming up there at the BASE that will support a great restaurant. People dont drink up there until you get down from the summit.

Vinnies is a typical "dew drop inn" when I first went into Vinnies I dressed like a YANKEE would going to a MARTHAs Vinyard setting which I found out later was the wrong way to dress in thare. I thought I hit a skin head bar and saw lots of Harleys out fron But Off duty Cops are the Bouncers so not much to worry about; Its really a neat place .

I go to Beantown, too. Great place for New Englander's to catch a Sox game in the summer. The restaurant is average but the bar is a lot of fun.

It's great that all the transplants have a place to go. But what about this Charlotte native? Where can I go to hang out with other Charlotte natives? Is there such a place other than my own house?
